Terrorism – Current situation

Anschlag in Wien
In November 2020, four people died and 23 others were injured, some seriously, in a terrorist attack in Vienna.

In recent years, Europe has been shaken repeatedly by terrorist attacks motivated by jihadism or right-wing extremism. According to the Federal Intelligence Service (FIS), the terrorist threat in Europe, including Switzerland, remains acute.

The threat from terrorism has become unpredictable. It emanates primarily from radicalised individuals who commit acts of violence using the simplest modi operandi, such as knife or vehicle attacks. Potential perpetrators include persons radicalised in Switzerland, returnees from conflict zones or jihadists released from prison.

Terrorists sometimes also use Switzerland as a logistical base for planning attacks in other countries or as a transit point.
