ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) is a new European travel authorisation system. It functions in a similar way as the US Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) or the UK Electronic Travel Authorisation.
With ETIAS, citizens of 59 countries will have to apply for a travel authorisation via the European Union website or an app before starting their journey to the Schengen Area. This travel authorisation will cost 7 euros and will normally be valid for 3 years.
ETIAS will come into force in the last quarter of 2026. At this stage, no action is required from travelers. The European Union will inform about the specific date for the start of ETIAS several months prior to its launch.
More information on ETIAS is available on the official ETIAS website of the European Union. The frequently asked questions (FAQ) on the official website provide answers for travellers, families, travel agencies and others.
Please note: there are many websites that contain false information about ETIAS. The only website that provides reliable information is the European Union website: ETIAS - European Union
