The Federal Department of Justice and Police has a wide range of responsabilities. It deals with socio-political issues such as the co-existence of Swiss and foreign nationals, asylum matters, internal security and the fight against crime. Marital status and citizenship issues are also just as much part of the FDJP's brief as corporate governance, gaming supervision, or the drafting of codes and instruments for international legal assistance and police cooperation.
The General Secretariat creates the conditions that allow the Head of Department, Karin Keller-Sutter, to fulfil her tasks within the government and vis-à-vis the public. In other words, it initiates, plans and coordinates the department's activities and prepares the material that is to form the basis for decisions that have to be taken on government, parliamentary or deparmental business. The General Secretariat supports the departmental offices in the planning and the achievement of their objectives.
