Convention on Biomedicine

The European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Dignity of the Human Being with regard to the Application of Biology and Medicine --better known as the Convention on Human Rights and Biomedicine of 4 April 1997-- sets forth the fundamental rights to be observed in human medicine. Together with the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR; SR 0.101) and the European Convention on the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (SR 0.106), it is probably one of the 165 key conventions and agreements passed by the Council of Europe. In so doing, a convention was enacted at the international level which stipulates legal principles which are binding on the field of medicine.
